January to December 2026 - Club continues to meet at its Salt Lake location every Saturday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
Events:
January 11, 2026 - Participated in the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii 33nd New Year's Ohana Festival (https://www.jcchawaii.org/events/nyof2026). This is an annual event celebrating the New Year with the public with Japanese culture and food. Introduced event attendees to the game of Go and played 9x9 games with them. This is our 6th participation in this event.
March 29, 2026 - HGC declined an invitation to participate in the Moanalua High School World Language Festival due to lack of manpower.
April 11, 2026 - HGC declined an invitation to participate in Onizuka Day of Exploration at University of Hawaii West Oahu Campus due to lack of manpower.
April 28, 2026 - Japan America Society of Hawaii invited HGC to participate in Japan Day at the Japanese Cultural Center. Nine Middle/High Schools participated in Japan Day; around 180 students. HGC taught four 30 minute classes about how to play Go and have the students play with each other. Each class consisted of around 25 students.
Significant events:
Sid Kobashigawa was invited to speak by the University of Hawaii Center of Japanese Studies regarding the history of Go on Tuesday January 13 at Moore Hall.
Myungwan Kim and Sid Kobashigawa started a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization called the Hawaii Go-Baduk Camps (https://www.hawaiigocamp.com/) to hold an annual international youth Go camp in Honolulu, Hawaii. First camp is scheduled for July 25, 2026 and will be 8 days long at the Pagoda Hotel. Go instructors will by Myungwan Kim 9P.
Honolulu Go Club worked with the Governor's office to bring the Kisei finals game 1 to Honolulu. Yomiuri held Kisei game 1 at the Waikiki Prince Hotel on January 22-23, 2026. Yomiuri is sponsored many other Go events at the Sheraton Hotel such as Go classes, Simultaneous games with professionals, friendship matches between US and Japanese amateurs. 13 Go professionals came in official capacities; Ichiriki Ryo, Shibano Toramaru, Kobayashi Koichi, Onishi Kenya, Takeshita Ryoya, Kyo Kagen, Michael Redmond, Iwata Saeka, Xie Yimin, Rin Kanketsu, Yasuda Akika, Takemiya Yoko Nihon Kiin Executive Director, Sakakibara Fumiko Kansai Kiin Executive Director. Also Abe Junichi Yomiuri Director & Vice President, Maeki Riichiro Yomiuri Senior Managing Director, Shimizu Shinichiro JAL Vice Chairman, Numahata Yasuo JAL Public Relations VP, Omura Yasuharu Hawaii Regional Manager attended.
Lee from the San Francisco Go Club donated 3 game clocks to our club. Lee came for the Kisei final game 1.
Guy donated a large teaching board with magnetic stones to our club.
On March 28 Maya Osawa visited the Honolulu Go Club along with her husband Masanori Osuka and son Chisei Osuka. Maya is a 3 time all Japan Amateur Champion (2002, 2013, 2023). She is the younger sister of professional Narumi Osawa 5P who visited Hawaii in May 2013. Maya runs the Igo Salon Saitama Shintoshin 囲碁サロン新都心.
June 6, 2026 - Kuroki Hirotaka of Kuroki Goishiten visited the HGC. Kuroki Goishiten is one of the top retailers in Japan for top qualifty Go equipment.
Go Education:
Sid Kobashigawa continues to teach Go at Pacific Buddhist Academy every Wednesday afternoon after school. First started teaching Go in Spring of 2025.
Guy Nguyen-Phuoc will teach a 10 week class at Lanakila Senior Center. Ron Takata to assist.
Guy Nguyen-Phuoc will teach a 6 week City and County of Honolulu Parks and Recreation Go class.
