Honolulu Go Club Go Tournaments will run for 4 weeks (possibly 5 weeks). Participants are responsible to make their matches at the club but can only play each other once. You don't need to come every week or come at 1pm but can compensate by playing a lot of games on the days or time duration that you do come. Before the start of the game both players must agree that it is a tournament game. Every game result must be reported to the tournament director (Sid) immediately after the game. An email will be sent out with the results of all tournament games each week.
Tournament fee will be $10, waived for students and retirees. Prizes will be for the top 2 players. First round losers of the playoffs will receive an issue of Go World.
All games will be on a 19x19 board unless 13x13 is agreed to by both players. Pacific Buddhist Academy students have only played on 13x13 boards so in the short term I would hope players would accommodate them until they can eventually transition to 19x19. My goal is for my students to start coming to the club so please make it easy for them to play.
We will be using clocks (purchased by Guy) for the tournament. Times will be 30 minutes per player with a 5 byo yomi of 30 seconds. Clocks can be set up and speak in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean per player. So a single clock can be speaking 2 languages simultaneously. Guy will have a tutorial on how to set up the clocks sometime before the tournament.
Komi is 6.5 points for even games. In all other games white will receive a 0.5 point komi. Handicaps will be determined by ELO ranks. Each 100 points difference will be a 1 rank difference. Any rank difference above 9 ranks will be played with 9 stone handicap + 6.5 points times the rank difference above 9.
We will use the ranks determined by ELO calculations. Ranks will be adjusted after each tournament.
The top 4 players with the most wins after the 4 weeks will play in a single elimination tournament. This will reward players that play a lot of games. Any ties for the top 4 spots will be based on the following tie breaking rules.
1. winning percentage.
2. Sum of Opponents Scores (SOS)
3. Sum of Defeated Opponents Scores (SODOS)
